General:
The following disc types were added: DVD-HD, DVD Blu-ray, DVD-mini, Other A, and Other B. The following forms and reports were affected by this change:
One the following forms the types “LD*” and “DVD*” were added to provide the capability to do wild card filters for all types of LDs and all types of DVDs. The other forms are unaffected by this wild card issue because they do not provide for filtering.
April 2005 marked the initial release of Mini DVDs. Samsung has announced a Mini DVD player, more at PhysOrg.com. Warner appears to me a major supporter of the format, more at Warner.com. The Mini DVD is a standard 8cm disc (same size as the Mini CD) and can be played in any standard DVD player using the smaller detent in the center of the tray. The Warner titles list for $15.00. The format appears to be targeted at the teen market but I intend to start cataloging the mini format next month. It seems to me that the Mini DVD has a better chance to succeed than the SONY format because the standard Mini DVD will have the support of multiple hardware manufacturers and content providers. Warner was the initial supporter of the DVD format in the face of resistance from Buena Vista and others. I expect that I will initially catalog the Mini format as a DVD and not the distinction in the remarks. Later in the year I expect to introduce in the software some additional DVD format variations in the "Type" field.
According to the trade press, high-definition DVD product will start shipping in North America in late 2005. There are currently two standards, with broad support, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. I had been expecting that the industry would eventually settle on a single consumer standard for the next generation DVD but all indications at the moment are that this situation promises to be a Beta versus VHS shoot-out in the market place.
Some users collect other home video media formats other and LD and DVD and have used the DVD Register to track these items in their colelction. The new disc types of "Other A" and "Other B" are intended to provide a general method to identify that these items are not LD and DVD without attempting to specifically provide tyes for all possible categories of home video formats.
Discs Form: The “Purchased From” field was changed to eliminate the default selection of stores that have since gone out of business. The drop down selection for this field will now only show stores that have been entered into the user catalog.
